About Hogwarts Legacy Game
Hogwarts Legacy is an action role-playing game that was developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games under its Portkey Games label in 2023. The game takes place in the late 1800s, a century before the events in the Harry Potter books, and is set in the Wizarding World universe. As a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the player learns to wield magical abilities and objects, and sets out to uncover a long-hidden secret with the help of other students and professors.
This release marks Avalanche’s first game since being acquired by Warner Bros. in 2017. The game’s development began in 2018, and pre-release gameplay footage was leaked online that same year. Despite the game’s announcement in 2020 generating significant anticipation, controversy ensued prior to release, as J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender people and accusations of antisemitism were levied against the game, leading to calls for a boycott. Following some delays, the game was ultimately released on 10 February 2023 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. It is slated for release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in May, and on Nintendo Switch in July of the same year.
During its early access period, Hogwarts Legacy broke records on streaming platform Twitch, becoming the most-watched single-player game of all time. Within two weeks of its official release, it had sold over 12 million copies, earning $850 million in global sales revenue, and accumulating over 280 million hours of playtime globally. The game’s success broke records for Warner Bros. Games. Reviews for Hogwarts Legacy were generally positive, with critics praising its combat, world design, characters, and adherence to the source material, but criticized its technical issues and lack of innovation as an open-world game.
